Website Maintenance Plans: What to Expect
A monthly website maintenance plan: the five things that must be in it, what usually is not, our three care plans, and five questions to ask before you sign up.
The website is done, paid for, live. Then what? Most website problems we fix are not day-one bugs. They are month-seven things: the SSL certificate expires, hosting fills up, the form stops sending, and nobody notices for weeks. A maintenance plan exists for that. But "maintenance" is sold in many shapes, so here is what should be inside one.
Five things that must be included
- Daily backups, tested by actually restoring one. A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a backup. Ask: "when did you last restore from backup?"
- Security updates. Platform, plugins, libraries. An un-updated site is an open door, and it is usually broken into by automated scripts, not by someone targeting you.
- Monitoring. Someone, or something, that knows your site is down before a customer tells you. Including alerts for SSL and domain expiry.
- Time for small changes, with a clear cap. Change a phone number, add project photos, update prices. The plan should say how many hours a month, and what happens beyond that.
- One person to contact, and a stated response time. Not a ticket to "support@" answered next week.
Good to have
- A short monthly report: visitors, uptime, what was updated.
- Priority when something breaks, ahead of regular project work.
- Performance checks: sites quietly slow down as images pile up.
What is usually not included (and should be stated)
- Domain and hosting. Paid directly to the providers. A maintenance plan manages them, it does not pay for them.
- New features. A new form, a new section, a new integration is project work, quoted separately before it starts.
- Content writing and advertising. Different work, different people.
A good plan states all three in writing. A plan that is vague about "what is included" is a plan with a surprise bill in it.
Our care plans
| Plan | For | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Essential Care | For a small site that rarely changes. Daily backups, updates and security monitoring, 1 hour of changes a month. | RM 250 / month |
| Complete Care | For a business that updates content regularly. Everything in Essential Care, 5 hours of changes a month, a monthly performance report, priority when something breaks. | Quoted after scope |
| System Care | For custom systems your staff use every day. Everything in Complete Care, support for the people using it, ongoing improvements. | Quoted after scope |
Unused hours do not roll over. Anything bigger than the cap is quoted as an add-on before work starts. Cancel any time, no long contract. The plans are also on the Monthly Care section of the home page.
Five questions to ask before signing up with anyone
- When did you last restore my site from a backup?
- How would you know if my site went down at 2 am?
- How many hours of changes are included, and what is the rate beyond that?
- Who do I WhatsApp, and how fast do they reply?
- What is not included?
If the answer to any of these is "it depends", ask for it in writing. Including from us. And if someone else built your site and you just want someone to notice when it goes down, we can start with monitoring only. Ask through the free review form.
