Website vs Facebook Page for a Business

You have a Facebook page, so do you need a website? What each one does for customer trust, when a page alone is enough, and when a website becomes necessary.

"I already have a Facebook page with plenty of followers. Do I need a website?" A fair question. The short answer: a page and a website do different jobs, and businesses that last usually have both. Here is the difference, without selling you anything.

What a Facebook page does well

  • Reach. People who do not know you can find you through shares, reviews and ads.
  • Proof of life. Last week's post shows the business is still operating.
  • Conversation. Comments and Messenger are where people ask without feeling awkward.
  • Free to start.

What a page cannot do

  • You do not control it. How many people see a post is decided by the algorithm. A page can be restricted, hacked or limited, and the appeal process is not in your hands. More on this in why organic reach keeps shrinking.
  • It is not organised. A new customer who wants to know "what do you do, how much, how do I book" has to scroll posts. The important information sinks under last year's festive greeting.
  • Google does not fully understand it. When someone types "renovation contractor Shah Alam", an organised website is far more likely to appear than a page.
  • It looks like everyone else's. Your competitor's page looks the same. Trust comes from being different.

What a website does

A website is a place you own, at an address you own. It answers three questions in 30 seconds without scrolling: what you do, for whom, and how to start. It appears on Google for the words people actually search. And it does not disappear when a platform changes its policy.

One more thing rarely mentioned: a website is where you send people. From the page, from ads, from a business card, from WhatsApp. One link, one organised story, one form. The page is where people find you. The website is where they decide.

When a page alone is enough

Honestly, there are situations where a website is not needed yet.

  • A new business, still testing whether there is demand.
  • Almost all sales come from repeat customers and word of mouth.
  • Products change every week and there is no "fixed service" to explain.

In those cases, organise the page properly (a complete About section, one pinned post that explains the service and how to order, the correct WhatsApp number) and keep the budget for now.

When a website becomes necessary

  • Customers ask "do you have a website?" before paying a deposit. That is a trust question, not a technical one.
  • You want to appear on Google for your service and your area.
  • You sell to companies or agencies, who need a company domain and email before taking you seriously.
  • You are tired of answering the same questions on Messenger every day.

How to make the two work together

The page for reach and proof of life: posts, reviews, ads. Each one brings people to one website link. The website to answer questions, show work, and send enquiries to WhatsApp with the details filled in. If you only do one, do the page first. When "do you have a website?" starts coming up, that is the signal.
